Profile / Cathy Hunt

Cathy Hunt is a Toronto-based artist who began her painting career in 2004 after spending 20 years in the Canadian Film Industry where she was honoured with a Gemini Award for Sound. She has been an Ontario Arts Council Artist in Education, working with elementary students exploring the relationship between visual art and music. She started a World Music program and taught and coordinated extracurricular visual art programs at her local public school in Roncesvalles Village. Cathy also loves to sing Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Roots-Folk and Classical choral repertoire. She is currently an improvisational singer with The Element Choir conducted by Christine Duncan.

Cathy Hunt’s paintings reference the earth and its elements. She frequently juxtaposes multiple canvasses to create rhythm, contrast, and movement. In 2006 her acrylic work on canvas, Collective Interaction, was selected to travel the province to celebrate Visual Art Ontario’s 30th anniversary. Her paintings have shown in Toronto at The Distillery District, The One of a Kind Show, Artscape Triangle Gallery, TWIST Gallery, AWOL’s annual Square Foot shows, Gallery 1313, Coop Gallery, Culture Days, Flash Forward Festival, and Liberty Village Open Studios. Cathy’s work is held in private and corporate collections in Ontario, Alberta and Newfoundland.

Cathy is inspired by the gestural mark making of Abstract Expressionists Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline; the musical philosophy of Wassily Kandinsky; the pattern making of textile designer William Morris and the sacred light and theosophical influences of Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, Georgia O’Keefe and William Blake.
